Earth Sciences
Earth Science is a catchall term for the sciences related to the study of the earth and the universe around it, which makes a scientific discipline that covers all aspects of how the world works. This is a special case in planetary science as the earth is the only known life -bearing planet. Earth Sciences is also known as Earth Sciences, Geoscience, and Geosciences.
There are four major disciplines in earth sciences, that to say, the geography, geology, geophysics and geodesy. These major disciplines use physics, chemistry, biology, history and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of main themes or areas of the Earth system.
Let me give you some idea about the various disciplines of earth science. Soil science is the study of soil as natural resources on the earth's surface, including soil formation, classification and mapping, physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils, and these properties in relation to the use and management of soil
Geography is the study of Earth and its lands, features, people, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write on Earth." Our historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis natural and human phenomena (geography as the study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), the study of the man-land, and research in earth sciences.
The stratosphere is the second major layer of Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and below the mesosphere. It is stratified in temperature, with the layers Hot higher and cooler layers below.
Geodesy, also called geodetics, a branch of earth sciences, is the scientific discipline deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, including its gravity field, in a three-time-varying three-dimensional space.
Well, above is a description of earth sciences and its' main branches. The study of Earth Science is vital to understand our "Mother Earth" correctly and develop a responsibility for the conservation and preservation of biodiversity and natural habitats.

Models of Science Dynamics (Hardcover) $140.16 Models of Science Dynamics aims to capture the structure and evolution of science, the emerging arena in which scholars, science and the communication of science become themselves the basic objects of research. In order to capture the essence of phenomena as diverse as the structure of co-authorship networks or the evolution of citation diffusion patterns, such models can be represented by conceptual models based on historical and ethnographic observations, mathematical descriptions of measurable phenomena, or computational algorithms. Despite its evident importance, the mathematical modeling of science still lacks a unifying framework and a comprehensive study of the topic. This volume fills this gap, reviewing and describing major threads in the mathematical modeling of science dynamics for a wider academic and professional audience. The model classes presented cover stochastic and statistical models, system-dynamics approaches, agent-based simulations, population-dynamics models, and complex-network models. The book comprises an introduction and a foundational chapter that defines and operationalizes terminology used in the study of science, as well as a review chapter that discusses the history of mathematical approaches to modeling science from an algorithmic-historiography perspective. It concludes with a survey of remaining challenges for future science models and their relevance for science and science policy. |

Boys, Girls & Body Science $12.76 With humour and sensitivity, "Boys, Girls & Body Science" provides no-nonsense answers for children – and parents – with questions about sex. Specifically designed for young readers, "Boys, Girls & Body Science" walks children through the wonders of their bodies in a direct, easy-to-read manner. The story begins with Nicholas, 7, and Jenny, 5, learning about different types of science in their class – from ecology to the digestive system. Then Meg Hickling, a guest speaker, comes to talk to them about a new type of science. Hickling talks about the "science names" for the children`s body parts, about good and bad touches and about making babies. She coaches the children not to be embarrassed or shy about body science: "We are going to make this just like a science lesson, we will learn to think like a scientist and we will learn the scientific names for our private parts," she says. Hickling is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching sexual education for over 25 years. She is an outstanding educator, and her ability to convey difficult material with sensitivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. In this latest publication, Hickling brings her award-winning lesson into the homes, schools and libraries of inquisitive children everywhere! |

You probably are already aware if there’s a brain surgeon in your midst, but you never know with rocket scientists. They’re sneaky and more likely to evolve into other life forms while no one’s looking. If their funding at NASA dries up they can go become a project manager at a Fortune 500 company. Or maybe they’re weekend rocket scientists with the National Guard, working on the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). They’re hidden until the point of ignition, and then the jig is up. “Actually it IS rocket science” printed in white on a black, 100% cotton t-shirt. |

Fairy-Tale Science $42.62 "Between 1550 and 1650, marvellous stories of women giving birth to animals, young girls growing penises, and valiant men slaying dragons appeared in Europe. Circulated in scientific texts and in the first two collections of fairy tales published on the continent, Giovan Francesco Straparola`s Le piacevoli notti and Giambattista Basile`s Lo cunto de li cunti, the stories invigorated readers and established a new literary genre. Despite the fact that the printed European fairy tale was born in Italy, however, contemporary readers tend to think of France or Germany as the genre`s place of origin.Fairy-Tale Science looks at the birth of the literary fairy tale in the context of early modern discourses on the monstrous, and explains how scientific discourse and literary theories of the marvellous limited the genre`s success on its native soil. Suzanne Magnanini argues that men of science positioned the fairy tale in opposition to science and fixed it as a negative pole in a binary system. This system came to define both a new type of scientific inquiry and the nascent literary genre. Magnanini also suggests that, by adopting theories of the monstrous as metaphors for their own literary production, Straparola and Basile aligned the literary fairy tale, the feminine, and the monstrous, and essentially marginalized the new genre.Fairy-Tale Science expands our understanding of the early modern European imagination and investigates the complex interplay between scientific discourse and marvellous literature." |

Science of War DVD $14.95 The Science of War DVD chronicles the jobs of scientists and engineers at the Soldier Systems Center campus at Natick. The U.S. military is the most advanced military in the world, and the technologies it uses on a daily basis must continue to rise above the rest. The Science of War DVD gives an insider’s look at what it takes to keep U.S. armed forces at the forefront of military outfitting. Science of War DVD How does the U.S. Military outfit its soldiers? What does it take to equip the most advanced fighting force on the planet? Who is responsible for making sure the American soldier has the most technologically advanced equipment available? The Soldiers System Center (SSC) in Natick, Massachusetts, that’s who! For the first time on television The Military Channel will take viewers inside the Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Massachusetts, one of the most sophisticated and little-known research facilities on the planet. In the Science of War military DVD, the Soldier Systems Center campus at Natick tests almost everything the modern day soldier or “Warfighter” needs for combat. The engineers and scientists working in Natick have the enormous responsibility of developing and recommending the equipment used by American soldiers all over the world. How serious is their work? The success and accuracy of the work done at the SSC could mean the difference between life and death. The Natick Soldier System Center DVD and Military Channel cameras will be along for the ride as soldiers are tested in climatic chambers while being exposed to environmental extremes. Their physical limits will be put to the test as they attempt to endure intense heat, cold, rain, wind and humidity. Inside the Immersion Lab our cameras will go underwater to examine cold stress performance testing. With water temperatures at 45-50 F, scientists study thermoregulatory fatigue and cold acclimatization. Soldiers involved in this testing are often times driven to hypothermia. In the War DVD, your shown how this extreme testing philosophy offers scientists the best possible data to improve “Warfighter” performance. The Hypobaric Chamber gives our cameras the ability to see human performance testing at 25,000 ft, or “thin air,” while never leaving sea level. The chamber tests altitude acclimatization, hypoxic preconditioning, and human performance while exposed to high altitude. The program will utilize state-of-the-art high-speed, high-definition camera technology to witness ballistics, laser weapons, and fire resistant testing of body armor, Kevlar vests, eye protection and clothing. The Science of War DVD from the Discovery Channel store, will travel with the Airdrop division to test new innovative technologies. The accuracy of an airdrop is vital to an army’s survival and dropping 50,000 lb from 25,000 ft is no easy task, especially when the demand is to be within 150 meters of the target while under enemy fire. Traveling along for the ride while testing state-of- |

Science And the Reenchantment of the Cosmos (Paperback) $14.8 Presents a revolutionary new theory that bridges the divide between science and spiritualityB?" Discloses the ramifications of non-localized consciousness and how the physical world and spiritual experience are two aspects of the same realityB?" Includes contributions from Jane Goodall, Ed Mitchell, Stanislav Grof, Ralph Abraham, and Christian de Quincy, among othersWhat scientists are now finding at the outermost frontiers of every field is overturning all the basic premises concerning the nature of matter and reality. The universe is not a world of separate things and events but is a cosmos that is connected, coherent, and bears a profound resemblance to the visions held in the earliest spiritual traditions in which the physical world and spiritual experience were both aspects of the same reality and man and the universe were one. The findings that justify this new vision of the underlying logic of the universe come from almost all of the empirical sciences: physics, cosmology, the life sciences, and consciousness research. They explain how interactions lead to interconnections that produce instantaneous and multifaceted coherence–what happens to one part also happens to the other parts, and hence to the system as a whole. The sense of sacred oneness experienced by our ancestors that was displaced by the unyielding material presumptions of modern science can be restored, and humanity can once again feel at home in the universe. |

The Science of Leonardo (Paperback) $12.12 Leonardo da Vinci`s scientific explorations were virtually unknown during his lifetime, despite their extraordinarily wide range. He studied the flight patterns of birds to create some of the first human flying machines; designed military weapons and defenses; studied optics, hydraulics, and the workings of the human circulatory system; and created designs for rebuilding Milan, employing principles still used by city planners today. Perhaps most importantly, Leonardo pioneered an empirical, systematic approach to the observation of nature-what is known today as the scientific method.Drawing on over 6,000 pages of Leonardo`s surviving notebooks, acclaimed scientist and bestselling author Fritjof Capra reveals Leonardo`s artistic approach to scientific knowledge and his organic and ecological worldview. In this fascinating portrait of a thinker centuries ahead of his time, Leonardo singularly emerges as the unacknowledged “father of modern science.” |
