Stock Market
What is the stock market trying to say to Obama?

You see, the stock market is always a leading indicator of things to come. You should all know, now that bounced from March 9 minimum on the assumption that the worst was over and Obama put trillion economy to prevent another stage downward into recession. Now, what is saying now that this market is slowly coming back down? Why Obama throw more money into it? Why would the courage to introduce stronger legislation that is bad for the economy and business in general? What is Obama trying to accomplish? And if the market back down tell him that his agenda is working?

Obama has never understood the first stimulus to fix the economy, or would have made sure that the money would have hit the streets in a timely fashion. It was just an excuse to spend trillions to reward the fans, move his agenda, and to ensure that there would be a visible part of the expenditure happens as a time of re-election. And since American voters are still so naive when it comes to one of his pronouncements, why not go for round 2?

A History of the Global Stock Market

A History of the Global Stock Market

$12.98

The stock market is central to the global economy. Tens of millions of people look to it to provide for a comfortable retirement. Central bankers watch it closely as they set monetary policy. Businesses around the world are forced to adjust the way they operate to meet the demands of equity investors. Yet very little has been written about how the modern global stock market came to be. In A History of the Global Stock Market, B. Mark Smith weaves an entertaining tale that ranges from medieval trading companies and nineteenth-century robber barons to modern theorists and international speculators. Here, Smith debunks the popular myth that the market is inevitably subject to recurring speculative bubbles and discredits the notion that the current "globalization" of the market is something radically different from what has occurred in the past.Informative, entertaining, and written for specialists and non-specialists alike, A History of the Global Stock Market is a worthy read for anyone who wants to understand the role of the stock market in the global economy.

The Japanese Stock Market

The Japanese Stock Market

$187.98

This timely volume brings together professors of finance and accounting from Japanese universities to examine the Japanese stock market in terms of its pricing and accounting systems. The papers report the results of empirical research into the Japanese stock market within the framework of new theories of finance. Academics, professionals, and anyone seeking to understand or enter the Japanese market will applaud the publication of this practical, informative volume. Having gathered data from the late 1970’s through 1984, the authors analyze the market’s behavior and the applicability of two major theoretical pricing models — the Capital Asset Pricing Models and the Efficient Market Hypothesis — to that market. Chapter 1 provides background statistical evidence on the behavior of monthly returns on Tokyo Stock Exchange common stocks. Chapter 2 discusses an empirical test of the capital asset pricing model. Chapter 3 examines evidence on the price performance of unseasoned new issues. The authors also examine the Japanese accounting disclosure system: Chapter 4 deals empirically with the information content of the annual accounting announcements and related market efficiency. The next chapter presents empirical evidence on the relationship between unsystematic returns and earnings forecast errors. Next, empirical research into the usefulness to investors of the disclosure system is examined. Finally, Chapter 7 presents several interesting questions and topics for future research on the Japanese stock market.

Stock Market Wizards

Stock Market Wizards

$13.48

The third in the bestselling Market Wizards series, this time focusing on the barometer of the economy—the stock market. It has been nearly a decade since the publication of the highly successful The New Market Wizards. The interim has witnessed the most dynamic bull market in US stock history, a collapse in commodity prices, dramatic failures in some of the world’s leading hedge funds, the burst of the Internet bubble, a fall into recession and subsequent rumblings of recovery. Who have been the ‘market wizards’ during this tumultuous financial period? How did some traders manage to significantly outperform a stockmarket that during its heyday moved virtually straight up? This book will feature interviews with a variety of traders who achieved phenomenal financial success during the glory days of the Internet boom. In contrast with the first two Market Wizard books, which included traders from a broad financial spectrum—stocks, bonds, currencies and futures—this volume will focus on traders in the stockmarket.

The Inefficient Stock Market

The Inefficient Stock Market

$29.48

Sparked with wit and humor, this clever and insightful book provides clear evidence that the stock market is inefficient. In the author’s view, models based on rational economic behavior cannot explain important aspects of market behavior. The book tackles important issues in today’s financial market in a highly conversational and entertaining manner that will appeal to most readers. Chapter topics include: estimating expected return with the theories of modern finance, estimating portfolio risk and expected return with ad hoc factor models, payoffs to the five families, predicting future stock returns with the expected-return factor model, super stocks and stupid stocks, the international results, the topography of the stock market, the positive payoffs to cheapness and profitability, the negative payoff to risk, and the forces behind the technical payoffs to price-history. For anyone who wants to learn more about today’s financial markets.

This series looks at future perspectives in a variety of fields- economics, ecology, management, leadership, stock markets, culture, and social issues. Ravi Batra published Stock Market Crashes in 1997, after the Asian crisis hit the newsstands. He predicted the US stock market drop in August 1998, as well as the market recovery when the Fed raised it’s rates — both happened. He is predicting another crash in 1999, resulting in the collapse of the "American Business Empire." Batra always offers interesting insights in his books. As in his earlier books, The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism (1978), he credits many of his ideas for economic reform as well as social historical analysis to his late Indian teacher P.R. THE STOCK MARKET BAROMETER

THE STOCK MARKET BAROMETER

$38.48

One of the most reliable stock market predictors is Dow’s Theory, developed by Charles H. Dow, the founder of The Wall Street Journal. That theory, which makes sense of the fluctuations of the Dow-Jones Industrial Average, is clearly and simply explained in The Stock Market Barometer by W.P. Hamilton. As Hamilton wrote, "The Dow-Jones average is still standard, although it has been extensively imitated. There have been various ways of reading it; but nothing has stood the test which has been applied to Dow’s theory." Besides providing this valuable explanation for anyone wishing to understand the rise and fall of stocks, Hamilton analyzes the history of the stock market since 1897. WILLIAM PETER HAMILTON was an editor of The Wall Street Journal and also wrote for Barron’s. He worked closely with Charles H. Dow, founder of the Journal, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the Dow Jones financial news service.

A Mathematician Plays The Stock Market

A Mathematician Plays The Stock Market

$12.98

In A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market best-selling author John Allen Paulos demonstrates what the tools of mathematics can tell us about the vagaries of the stock market. Employing his trademark stories, vignettes, paradoxes, and puzzles (and even a film treatment), Paulos addresses every thinking reader’s curiosity about the market: Is it efficient? Is it rational? Is there anything to technical analysis, fundamental analysis, and other supposedly time-tested methods of picking stocks? How can one quantify risk? What are the most common scams? What light do fractals, network theory, and common psychological foibles shed on investor behavior? Are there any approaches to investing that truly outperform the major indexes? Can a deeper knowledge of mathematics help beat the odds? All of these questions are explored with the engaging erudition that made Paulos’s A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper and Innumeracy favorites with both armchair mathematicians and readers who want to think like them. Paulos also shares the cautionary tale of his own long and disastrous love affair with WorldCom. In the tradition of Burton Malkiel’s A Random Walk Down Wall Street and Jeremy Siegel’s Stocks for the Long Run, this wry and illuminating book is for anyone, investor or not, who follows the markets-or knows someone who does.

The Psychology Of The Stock Market

The Psychology Of The Stock Market

$25.48

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE STOCK MARKET: Human Impulses Lead To Speculative Disasters is a brief, but fascinating guide about what really influences the way the financial markets behave. Here is the top five principles of the book in summary: 1. Your main purpose must be to keep the mind clear and well balanced.Hence, do not act hastily on apparently sensational information;do not trade so heavily as to become anxious; and do not permit yourself to be influenced by your position in the market. 2. Act on your own own judgement, or else act absolutely and entirely on the judgement of another, regardless of your own opinion."To many cooks spoil the broth." 3. When in doubt, keep out of the market. Delays cost less than losses. 4. Endeavor to catch the trend of sentiment.Even if you should be temporarily against fundamental conditions,it is nevertheless unprofitable to oppose it. 5. The greatest fault of ninety-nine percent out of one hundred active traders is being bullish at high prices and bearish at low prices. Therefore, refuse to follow the market beyond what you consider a reasonable climax, no matter how large the possible profits that you may appear to be losing by inaction.

The term "insider" may be logically applied to those successful operators who do make the market their business. But anyone who takes enough time to study the market and align his operations with successful trends may just as logically remove himself from the "public" class of lambs and enter this indefinite but successful class of "insiders." "If it were not so" this book, and many others, would not have been written. -from "How to Join the Successful Group" Richard Schabacker is considered the grandfather of technical analysis, and his theories and acumen are a continuing influence on investment philosophy today. This classic in the field and still of tremendous value to long-term, short-term, and beginning investors alike, covers, in clear, non-technical language, all the basics of making sure your money serves you well in the market: . the proper attitude-and the wrong approach-to investing . how to take advantage of cycles of business and securities . when to buy and sell . fundamental and technical factors to watch . the proper use of stock charts . market psychology and why it matters . how to diversify risk . whose advice to follow-and whose you should ignore . and much more.

Stock Market Welfare Capitalism

Stock Market Welfare Capitalism

$35.98

This is a book about Washington Consensus capitalism and the controversies its encroachment causes in Japan and Germany. Many people in both those countries share the assumptions dominant today in Britain and America–that managers should be intent solely on creating shareholder value and that shareholders’ financial logic alone should determine who buys what company on the stock exchange. That way efficiency (and hence global welfare) will be maximized. The Japanese and German advocates of full-bloodied market capitalism are not having it all their own way, however. In both countries there are articulate defenders of what they consider to be a better way of life, informed by a more human, more social-solidary, set of values. Dore traces the fascinating debates which ensue on corporate governance, on worker rights, on supplier relations, on cartels and anti-trust, on pensions and welfare. He alsoanalyses actual changes in economic behaviour-an essential means of sorting out a lot of the muddle and double-talk not just in the internal debates themselves, but even more in the foreign reporting of them. These accounts of the battle for the national soul in Japan and Germany constitute one of the finest contributions to the ‘diversity of capitalism’ debate. Dore’s account should be read by anyone who is interested to know whether, for all the talk of globalization, that diversity is going to survive.

Streetsmart Guide to Timing the Stock Market

Streetsmart Guide to Timing the Stock Market

$4.98

Most investors have been led to believe that stock market behavior is random and cannot be timed. Nothing could be further from the truth! Futures markets have been successfully timed by traders since the mid 1800s, and today’s stock markets exhibit amazingly similar, recognizable trending patterns. Investors who understand and spot those patterns can—with a minimum of trades—double, triple, or even quadruple their long-term returns! THE STREETSMART GUIDE TO TIMING THE STOCK MARKET explains for all investors how basic technical tools—well-known and popular in the futures market—can show you how to make the most of stock market opportunities. Using key indicators from the futures market, leading futures trader and advisor Colin Alexander has developed an innovative decision-making system for determining which stocks to buy and how to recognize when those stocks are poised for an upward move. Case studies for market leaders, including IBM, Citicorp, Schlumberger, and others, demonstrate the book’s techniques in action, and show the value of technical analysis in predicting stock movements. This groundbreaking system, similar to work done by John Murphy, Richard Dennis, and other legendary futures traders, will show you how to: Buy only those stocks most likely to have above-average performance; Run your profits and cut your losses; Sell when either the stock or the market is running out of steam; Monitor the risks—as you let the rewards take care of themselves; Take personal responsibility for your investments. That last point bears repeating. You wouldn’t for one second think of driving a car without oil or going sailing without checking the weather. Yet that is precisely what the proponents of buy-and-hold would have you do: buy a stock or a mutual fund and hold it forever, ignoring cycles and trends which, quite frankly, could be understood and acted upon with a minimum of research. THE STREETSMART GUIDE TO TIMING THE STOCK MARKET shows you how to conduct that research, and profit from the stock market’s cycles and long-term trends. Whether you use its techniques to buy high-tech stocks or blue chips, you will effectively take control of your investments. Market timing secrets learned in THE STREETSMART GUIDE TO TIMING THE STOCK MARKET will give you renewed confidence and optimism. This breakthrough book makes advanced market timing techniques understandable—and makes it possible for you to achieve long-term returns superior to those of indexing, mutual funds, or buy-and-hold strategies.

How and When to Invest in the Stock Market

How and When to Invest in the Stock Market

$32.48

A unique approach with supporting market data (1986 to 2005) and case studies are presented by the author. The approach is simple and easy to use and follow. This revised edition includes experience gained from market period from year 2000 to 2005. The methodology discussed in the previous edition stood well during the difficult market conditions from year 2000 to 2003. This book shows investors how and when to invest in stocks, mutual funds and index options. The trading strategies are based on market timing techniques, with emphasis on technical analysis. It will expose investors to an exciting new approach in timing the trades. The methodology is based on detecting the short-term and long-term market trends and how to strategically trade the market to maximize gain situations and to minimize loss occurrences. The book contains many examples and case studies including short and long term trading scenarios with loss and profit tally to help investors to gain better understanding of the methodology. This book is unique and different from other books on the subject matter. It makes the investing process foolproof. Buy and sell signals generated by the methodology presented in this book make the investing process mechanical without any attachment or emotional feeling for the stock market. In general, it tells investors when to get in the stock market and when to step aside. It removes the damaging effect of emotions and feelings from the investing process. Readers should note that based on Section 103(F) included in this revised edition, $1,000 invested in S&P 500 index on 2/1/1991, and parking the money in the interest bearing money market account during the bear market period from 10/6/00 to 5/2/03, and then reinvested back into S&P 500 index on 5/2/03 would approximately accumulate to $6,000 by end of March 31, 2006. That equals an annualized simple return of approximately 33%. However, readers must remember that the past performance is no guarantee of future results. This book is designed to help to get the most from investments with the least amount of effort and should serve both the novice and the experienced investors. This book is for those who: Believe in investing time before investing their hard-earned money. Are seriously concerned, but unsuccessful in their quest for investing and interested to become a successful investor. Do not want to repeat the common mistakes in playing stock market and want to push the odds in their favor for maximizing gains. Have general knowledge of the stock market, stocks, mutual funds and market indexes, such as DJIA, DJTA, S&P 500, S&P 100 and VLG, and some familiarity with business newspapers, such as Baron’s, Investor’s Business Daily and The Wall Street Journal. Are willing to spare at least one hour of their time every week for collecting market data, and tabulating and analyzing them in accordance with Chapter 2.

Three Essays on Stock Market Anomalies

Three Essays on Stock Market Anomalies

$65.98

Stock market anomalies are empirical findings that cannot be explained by the widely-accepted financial theories. It is important to study such anomalies because understanding them can greatly improve our understanding of financial markets. This book studies two of the most important anomalies in recent history: the correlation between stock returns and inflation and the predictability of stock returns. Chapter 1 is an introduction. In Chapter 2, I develop a generalized theoretical model and utilize it to investigate the changing stock return-inflation relationship in the US. In Chapter 3, I propose a new statistical test for autocorrelation that is particularly useful for testing the recent behavioral models. When the test is applied to the data, contrary to the previous research, I find evidence supporting the behavioral models. In Chapter 4, I investigate the stock reaction to the market-wide information and find further evidence in support of the recent behavioral models. This book extends the literature, and should be useful to investment practitioners and researchers in empirical asset pricing and behavioral finance.

Originally devised as a practical course for investors, it is as alive, vital and instructional today as the day it was written. It paved the way for Robert Edwards and John Magee’s best-selling Technical Analysis of Stock Trends – a debt which is acknowledged in their foreword: ‘Part One is based in large part on the pioneer researches and writings of the late Richard Schabacker.’ Schabacker presents technical analysis as a totally organized subject and comprehensively lays out the various important patterns, formations, trends, support and resistance areas, and associated supporting technical detail. He presents factors that can be confidently relied on, and gives equal attention to the blemishes and weaknesses that can upset the best of analytical forecasts. Factors which investors would do well to absorb and apply when undertaking the fascinating game of price, time and volume analysis.

How the Republicans Caused the Stock Market Crash of 1929

How the Republicans Caused the Stock Market Crash of 1929

$20.98

This book presents an alternative view of the Stock Market Boom and Crash of 1929 as having resulted from government intervention, specifically from flawed government policy in the form of the Republican party’s 1928 election promise of an upward tariff revision, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Bill. As such, the stock market in particular and the market mechanism in general were not to blame, government was. Where the market was to blame, however, was in its reaction to the massive technology shock that was electric power-based extremely-high-throughput, continuous-flow mass production techniques (EHTCFPT) pioneered at the Ford Motor Company’s Highland Park plant in Detroit, Michigan. Specifically, aggregate income and expenditure failed to rise commensurately with vastly increased productive capacity, resulting in underincome.

"Important reading for serious investors."-InvestorsInsight.comFor most Americans, a 401k plan is their first exposure to investing. Many of us are relying on the stock market to provide for us in our retirement yet at the same time, most of us are afraid of the stock market. It’s a valid concern. How can something so important to our financial future be so completely unpredictable? When Michael Alexander first started investing in the stock market, he noticed that few analysts seemed to have much knowledge of what the market has done in the past. While no one can give precise answers to questions about the future of the market and be right all the time, Alexander feels that it’s possible to gain an understanding of the future of the stock market by studying its past.Analyzing years of historical data for patterns of behavior that might repeat in the future, Alexander provides strong statistical evidence for a cyclical pattern in the stock market. These Stock Cycles show that long periods of poor stock returns have always followed long periods of good returns. Are we in for good times or is the party over?

This book provides a glimpse into the history, development, regulation, and increasing importance that the stock market plays in business and economic growth, as well as the investment strategies of individuals–in the U.S. and around the world, including Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, and "emerging markets" in the developing world that are rapidly integrating into the global economy. To explore the roles and workings of the stock market, the authors trace its evolution from its origins on Wall Street in the 1700s to the present, and examine the varied ways in which it is used to generate economic value.
