Amok Train $8.47 This low-budget Italian exercise stars Bo Svenson (in a ridiculous-looking fake beard) as a college professor who takes a group of American students to a remote Serbian village to witness an ancient Balkan religious service. Unbeknownst to the kids, Svenson has an ulterior motive: he intends to recruit Beverly (Mary Kohnert), the sole virgin of the group, to participate in the ceremony — actually an occult ritual in which she is to become the Devil’s bride. The kids learn of this treachery and try to escape aboard a moving train, but soon find that the engineer is none other than Satan himself, who causes the train to jump its tracks and speed off through the wilderness toward the village again. Most of the kids are destroyed in their attempts to avert the train’s course — all but Beverly, who has foiled the Devil’s plan in her own way, thanks to an enigmatic flutist (Igor Pervic). Needless to say, the Evil One is not pleased. Released directly to video, this attractive-looking but rather hollow occult horror is related in name only to Mario Bava’s penultimate Beyond the Door 2, which in turn bears almost no connection to Exorcist rip-off Beyond the Door (aka Chi Sei?). ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

Night Train $12.78 The train trip described by pianist Amina Figarova might be deemed an allegorical reference to one’s journey through life and the myriad events, large and small, that readily come to mind at the end of the trip. This album is Azerbaijan native and Rotterdam resident Figarova’s fourth album and, with the exception of some help with lyrics, is made up of her compositions. Each tune is one of several movements that make up the story of the train ride, with each event the track represents eloquently described in detail by Figarova in the liner notes. There are unplanned meetings with all sorts of fellow travelers, along with four musical interludes which represent stops the train makes throughout the journey, essentially to allow the protagonist of the story to catch her breath and smell the roses. All of these goings on are expressed by individual pianistic ventures by Figarova as well as some fine ensemble playing. There are also notable solos by Jarmo Hoogendijk and Carolyn Breuer on such tracks as “Rio Sueno (River of Dreams),” a lovely, flowing piece, as the name implies. Vocalist Denise Jannah is present on two tracks. She is appropriately poignant on “Sari (Sadness),” which deals with a young woman distraught over losing track of her lover. Here Hoogendijk’s flugelhorn plays in sympathetic juxtaposition to Jannah’s vocal. Not all the pieces are in slow motion. “Open to the World” has an upbeat, optimistic ring to it as it showcases Breuer’s hard bop alto and good ensemble work. All in all, the music created by Figarova and friends is enchanting, if not all that substantial. But not everything needs to be a tour de force or a breakthrough to be enjoyed. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi Performers: Jarmo Hoogendijk – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Amina Figarova – Piano, Keyboards; Carolyn Breuer – Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano); Chris Strik – Drums; Denise Jannah – Vocals; Kurt Van Herck – Sax (Tenor); Sami Kaneda – Vocals; Wiro Mahieu – Bass |

Stop That Train $9.58 Tag-team DJ duos (as opposed to the more common and popular singer-DJ duo format) were quite unusual when this pair emerged in the late ’70s, and they remain so today. But Clint Eastwood (younger brother of the legendary DJ Trinity) and General Saint proved that it could work, and if Stop That Train didn’t achieve quite the success that Two Bad D.J. had, it was nevertheless a solid effort with several excellent tracks and filler that stopped short of being killer but was nevertheless perfectly serviceable for most dancehall needs. This reissue adds three discomix versions to the original program, as well as some interesting liner notes. Highlights include the duo’s version of the classic rocksteady title track (the song for which the pair is still remembered) and a dark, edgy original number titled “Monkey Man” (not to be confused with the classic Toots Hibbert ska anthem of the same name). Less memorable are the awkwardly swinging “Stop Jack” and a slightly less awkwardly skanking take on Leonard Dillon’s “Everything Crash.” The backing tracks are by Inity Rockers, and are rock-solid throughout. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Cameron Pierre – Guitar; Clint Eastwood – Vocals; Courtney Pine – Saxophone; Delroy Donaldson – Keyboards |

Hallelujah Train $9.58 Mr. B. (Mark Braun) is a talented boogie-woogie pianist who on this CD teams up successfully with bassist Paul Keller’s Bird of Paradise orchestra, a seven-year-old big band from Michigan. The arrangements smoothly integrate Mr. B. into the orchestra and these enthusiastic live performances are often quite memorable. Although largely a “no-name” big band, the many soloists are consistently talented (with the standouts being Mark Hynes on tenor, altoist Scott Peterson and trumpeter Paul Finkbeiner) and the pianist is in consistently inspired form. Highlights include “Hallelujah Train,” “Brauny,” tributes to Little Brother Montgomery, Horace Silver and Eddie Palmieri, an exciting rendition of “Down the Road Apiece,” “Air Mail Special” and a lengthy “B’s Boogie Woogie.” Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Brandon Cooper – Trumpet; Cary Kocher – Vibraphone, Percussion; Chris Frazer Smith – Trombone; Chris Hammer Smith – Trombone; Dave Froseth – Percussion; Gene Bartley – Trombone; George Bedard – Guitar; Jeff Gedz – Trumpet; John Paxton – Trombone; |

Train of Thought $31.99 Three years after Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, it’s great to hear that Dream Theater hadn’t lost their überheavy edge. John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, and bassist John Myung effectively peeled back the pretentious excesses of Six Degrees, turned them in on themselves, and came up with a leaner, meaner but no less ambitious outing. The centerpiece track, despite the fact that it is second on the disc, is “This Dying Soul: IV. Reflections of Reality (Revisited).” A tome about alcoholism and recovery, it’s strident riff opens out onto vast sonic panoramas where pianos and rhythm section offer Petrucci the space he needs to take his guitar playing into overdrive. Also, lyrically this is an evolutionary track on the set; it opens doors for the rest of the narratives here. Whereas the opener, “As I Am,” is an anthem of resistance and independence, from “This Dying Soul” onward, themes of acceptance, surrender, and willingness become the M.O. for transcendent transformation. Struggles with the past, new encounters, and near despair are common themes, as on the brilliantly textured and detailed “Train of Though.” Note the beautiful interplay between the guitars and keyboards on “Endless Sacrifice,” the insane drums and buzz saw attack on the intro to “Honor Thy Father,” or the brilliant play on the intro to “Seasons of Whither” in the intro to “In the Name of God,” before the almighty riffing takes it into crunchland with a deep, poignant reflection on spiritual and religious hypocrisy. This is hard, heavy progressive metal at its very best lyrically and musically. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Eugene Friesen – Cello; James LaBrie – Vocals; John Myung – Bass; John Petrucci – Guitar; Jordan Rudess – Keyboards; Mike Portnoy – Drums |

Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train $16.96 The finest way to travel from Siliguri to Darjeeling is by way of the Darjeeling Himalaya Toy Train. The surroundings of Siliguri are well worth a visit and just a few kilometres away is Kali Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess, Kali and also Coronation Bridge an old but impressive structure that was designed and built by the British in 1930.The small train begins to move away slowly and travels through Siliguri, the buildings of which were constructed after the railroad. There is little traffic as only one train travels into the mountains each morning with another returning in the evening.British engineering made this railroad possible, an 88 kilometre railroad connection to the mountain world of the Himalayas. The idea was to transport the world famous tea of the same name from Darjeeling, quickly, economically and safely to the coast from where it was shipped to the United Kingdom. The passage through Jore Bunglow is so narrow that the police must stop the road vehicles so that the train can travel through the village without danger.Several jeeps gather in the narrow street that is cloaked in a mysterious mist. Finally we arrive at Ghoom Station, at just below 8,000 feet the railroad’s highest point.Darjeeling short main street with its many shops and restaurants leads to Charastha Square in which noble buildings are reminiscent of glorious times gone by.Thank you the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train for a unique journey and one which will not easily be forgotten! |
