System $18.98 It’s hard to call System a comeback, as Seal never really went away (despite the long gaps between albums), but this 2007 album arrived with the greatest anticipation he’s had since the mid-’90s, when his second eponymous album arrived just after the twin hits of “Crazy” and “Killer.” All that anticipation had little do with Seal’s music, it had more to do with his sudden re-emergence as tabloid fodder in the wake of his 2005 marriage to supermodel Heidi Klum. In the wake of the runaway reality TV hit Project Runway, Klum’s star never burned brighter, and its luminescence spilled over to Seal as well, helping to propel him back to the spotlight. Stature so increased, Seal decided to ditch longtime producer Trevor Horn and hire Stuart Price, Madonna’s collaborator for her calculatedly retro-disco Confessions on a Dance Floor. Seal employed Price for a similar purpose but instead of reaching way back into the electro past, he decided to revive the house-inflected sound of “Crazy” for System, right down to how the album’s opener “If It’s in My Mind, It’s on My Face” rides a similar stuttering, surging sixteenth-note hook into its chorus. System may be a dance album but it never feels as if its meant for clubs and parties, unless they’re upscale cocktail parties. This may not be as soft as the music he made after “Kiss from a Rose,” but the feel is the same: it’s calming, atmospheric music, even when the beat pulsates relentlessly, as on “Dumb” or “The Right Life.” As this is an appealing sound, System goes down smooth, even if it’s rather strange that it is so nostalgic for the pre-Clinton ’90s, but this is so much a production piece that, apart from the acoustic “Rolling,” the only song that stands outside of the sheer sonic gloss is “Wedding Day,” a genuinely odd piece of kitsch duet with Heidi herself. She acquits herself well as the spouses exchange pledges of devotion, but it’s just too silly to take seriously, yet it’s so sincere in its convictions that it is more grabbing than the rest of the record. Fuck the System $13.98 In 2003, one might expect to find the members of the Exploited in the dole queue farting and chuckling, or perhaps scraping their tired bones together for a reunion tour, where they’d unenthusiastically sing “Sex and Violence” for the fourth generation of Mohawked youngsters. Their main theme of chaos doesn’t seem like it could possibly jibe well with adulthood. But it turns out these flabby, bald-headed punkers have plenty of bite left in them. In fact, on Fuck the System, they sound like they could incinerate Blink 182, beat the Offspring to a pulp and leave them in a ditch, and plunder and rape Sum 41. If nothing else, the Exploited could certainly teach those pretty boy whippersnappers a couple of things. Fuck the System rips from the earliest howl of the title track to its closing screech. It manages to be violent and catchy, while the lyrics are simple, though not crude. Wattie Buchan’s vocals are intense like he means what he screams, and the band is tight, firing off blistering rounds of shrapnel-like punk rock. Discreet Music $14.98 The latter part of 1975 was a remarkably creative period for Brian Eno. With his masterpiece Another Green World, Eno began moving away from the structure and sound of pop music toward a more static instrumental model, influenced in part by Erik Satie and strongly informed by his prior collaborations with Robert Fripp. Recorded just a month after Another Green World, Discreet Music is his first full foray into what has become known as ambient music. Using the same system of two reel-to-reel tape recorders as No Pussyfooting and Evening Star, Eno was able to layer simple parts atop one another, resulting in a beautiful piece of music that never really changes but constantly evolves with the addition and decay of different parts. And while there were elements of noise and dissonance on the albums with Fripp, all the sounds here are calming and serene. The second half of the album deals with the same ideas of recurring themes and evolution but uses a different approach. Here, members of the Cockpit Ensemble use pieces of the score of Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, but the relation of these elements changes over time by having the parts slow at differing intervals or using different lengths of the musical score. The same notions of theme and constant variation appear, but without the aid of the tape delay system. The tones of the strings are vastly different from the synth tones of the title track, but the effect on the listener is the same, with the pieces delicately unfolding over time. Discreet Music’s reputation as a groundbreaking and influential work is surpassed only by its placid beauty. Enemy of the System $11.88 You’ve got to hand it to the Toasters. When the third ska revival hit in the mid-’90s, they had already been on the scene for over a decade, and bandleader Rob Hingley’s Moon Ska NYC label was home to some of America’s (and Canada’s and England’s) best ska bands. They took advantage of ska’s new wave of popularity by releasing a truckload of albums by young bands, and while some have criticized Moon for a certain lack of discrimination during that period, there was no question that the Toasters’ own releases were of the highest quality. With the subsequent collapse of the ska revival and the partial collapse of the record industry, Moon went out of business, and the Toasters went back to doing what they do best: playing top-notch 2-tone-derived modern ska for live audiences. Their first studio album in five years shows blessedly little in the way of artistic maturation; it’s chock-full of the same old straight-up, R&B-influenced ska that the band has been playing since the early ’80s. Blues influences are both explicit (as in “Sweet Home Town Jamaica,” a blatant rewrite of “Sweet Home Alabama”) and implied (as in the song title “Sitting on Top of the World,” which has nothing to do with the Howlin’ Wolf classic), and tempos are generally brisk; things occasionally slow to a more sedate skank (as on the excellent “Pendulum”), but for the most part this is joyful, upbeat ska. There are two hidden tracks at the end of the album. Enemy of the System is maybe not quite up to the highest standards this band has set before, but then, those standards are very high. Over the course of seven extended cuts, King Sunny Ade & His African Beats lay down their trademark mix of talking drum-driven grooves, multi-guitar weaves, lilting vocal harmonies, and pedal steel accents; for this major-label debut, the band also chucks in some tasteful synthesizer bits and a few reggae-dub flourishes. System Overload $14.98 “Headbanging fury of the highest order” — that’s a neat little summary of HDK’s 2009 offering, the appropriately titled System Overload. Everything is cranked to ten throughout, but with the vocals often veering off into melodic territory, System Overload cannot be considered a true extreme metal release (although their full name, Hate Death Kill, has “extreme metal” written all over it). A side project led by guitarist Sander Gommans, who can most often be spotted as a member of Dutch goth metallists After Forever, HDK are full of crushing riffs, precise drumming, and swirling electronics — with vocals that alternate between growled and almost Sebastian Bach-like at times. A Tribute to System of a Down $10.98 With all the acclaim their landmark album Toxicity brought to System of a Down, it was inevitable that the tributes and homages would start rolling in sooner rather than later. Big Eye’s A Tribute to a System of a Down collects covers of some of the most recognizable tracks from both Toxicity and their 1998 self-titled debut, attempting to celebrate the band’s unique mix of explosive thrash metal and brooding, melodic moments. However, the versions of “Darts,” “Sugar,” “Chop Suey!,” and “Toxicity” here just don’t have the visceral and dramatic impact of the originals, no matter how much the musicians covering them respect the material they’re playing. Pioneers of Electronic Music $15.98 New World Records’ Pioneers of Electronic Music is a repackaging of the CRI title of the same name and centers around the activity of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center founded by Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening. The designation “pioneers” in this case is a particularly apt one — these are not pioneers of techno or some other latter-day popular music involving the use of electronics, but pioneers of electronic music itself. At the Museum of Modern Art, the earliest four of these Ussachevsky and Luening pieces — Sonic Contours, Low Speed, Invention in Twelve Notes, and Fantasy in Space — were presented on October 26, 1952, in what is now adjudged as the second-ever concert of electronic music in American history. Add Incantation and you have the contents of a 10″ LP called Tape Recorder Music, released in 1955 on the Innovations label, the first commercially issued record of American electronic music and an extremely scarce item in its original form. Before finally landing on this New World CD, some or all of these selections have been released in a variety of forms, even at one point in “fake stereo.” It is good that they now have a permanent home — by right they should not ever be out of print. Listening to the early monophonic Ussachevsky and Luening tape recorder music and it is easy to underestimate what they achieved; in order for this primitive system to do its thing, one needed to have a trigger, which was generally either Ussachevsky’s piano or Luening’s flute. The flute, as it turns out, was an excellent choice, as its purity of tone was closest to the sound of a sine wave, later the basic seed of most electronic music in its next historical phase. Some may feel that Luening’s plainly Native American-derived melody in Fantasy in Space is a little cheesy; at the time, it was a good handle for those listeners who could barely consider this music. Nevertheless, the impact of these early pieces was both enormous and universal — the opening of Kraftwerk’s 1977 piece The Hall of Mirrors from the album Trans Europe Express directly references the opening of Incantation; it just so happens that Florian Schneider is also a flute player, and has designed his own equipment based on its capabilities. Although Luening’s Moonflight and Ussachevsky’s Piece for Tape Recorder originate elsewhere, the balance of the disc is taken from the two-LP CRI set Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center: Tenth Anniversary. This was a very popular electronic music album in the 1970s, and those who owned the original may have a nostalgic flashback in listening to pieces like Bülent Arel’s Stereo Electronic Music No. 2 or Pril Smiley’s Kolyosa. Mario Davidovsky’s Synchronisms No. 5 has actually managed to gain some currency as a standard repertoire item, along with several of his other Synchronisms, but none of the works was created with the intention of becoming part of the larger discipline of Western art music. The Rough Guide to the Music of France $14.98 France has developed a strong musical scene over the last decade, one that treasures its past (evident in “La Bourée Des Capucins”), but also looks to a multi-cultural future, as evidenced by acts like Lo’Jo and Massilia Sound System. Inevitably, there’s plenty of accordion — just listen to Jo Privat & Didier Roussin or Les Orgres De Barback — but not in the cheesy, sidewalk café sense. That bal musette music, so lovingly played by Les Primitifs du Futur (which includes cartoonist R. Crumb), has a lush, sensual quality that leads well into classic chanson from Edith Piaf or Léo Ferré. Gabriel Yacoub represents the Breton connection, where French and Celtic music meet. France is also home to some hot jazz and gypsy music, as typified by Romane and Angelo Debarre. The pipes are part of the French tradition and get an airing on the spicy “Cayenne,” while the vocal past can be heard on “Deomp D’An Univet.” Happily, the uncategorizable sound of Dédale is included — and fitting end, since they’re informed by French tradition, but intent on making something very new and challenging from the past.
