Math Manipulatives

Brain Maths, from Tan Thoo Liang, is a math book extra associated with Singapore Math. This is a series in two volumes, and this review is about volume 1. E 'for students 8 years old and older.
On the back cover, it says that "Brain mathematics is a series of two volumes that have been written to help you increase your IQ and also to develop the mental flexibility. "I admit, I am rather dubious about this book actually doing an intelligent person, but the problems are really challenging and varied and the flexibility they need in mathematical thinking. In the credits, it lists a series of books previously published in puzzle and puzzles, books of which I am most familiar with most of Martin Gardener. If you're familiar with Martin Gardener, you have some idea of the flavor of mathematics Brain. However, Brain mathematics is much easier than anything written by Martin Gardener, as befits a book written for primary school aged children.
As a teacher of mathematics, I use this book in different contexts. E 'useful for students preparing for examinations for admission to schools of talent and talent, as Hunter College High School and The Anderson School. These examinations are expecting children to be able to resolve non-routine problems in mathematics with a wide variety of techniques, and problems in this book encourage exactly those skills. For that kind of advanced student, this book is relatively simple they can do the problems quickly, and make good warm-up I then tighten with more complex problems of similar nature.
I also use this book with homeschoolers. No matter how good curriculum is mathematics is almost always imperfect, because the problems in the curriculum have a particular "flavor". Students who use a curriculum can become the taste very good at solving problems in this curriculum, but still become shocked when presented with problems from a different curriculum, and thus with a different flavor. For that reason, I always use materials that accompany the Brain including mathematics, books by Edward Zaccaro, Math Olympiad problems, and so on.
Students are not particularly advanced, many of the problems of mathematics Brain binding. I often present as a puzzle, and sometimes have appropriate manipulatives ready for the student to use.
I rarely teach mathematics in groups, but if I did, I think many of the problems in this book would be ideal for students elementary schools to work in small groups. Are quite complex so that they can be fruitfully approached from different perspectives and provide an opportunity for a discussion of interesting group.
Although I really like this book, there are some minor warnings to my recommendation. First, the book is from Singapore, so some Conventions can be a bit 'of confusion. For example, refer to order of operations by BODMAS acronym (instead of the American Pemdas). I'm still not quite sure what the B and O for the stand. A bigger flaw is that all persons who are or cartoon in white or Asian. Finally, let me clarify that this is not no way a textbook rather, is a book of mathematical problems thereafter.
