History of Our Children’s Academy and Our Children’s Middle Academy
In 2006, The Our Children’s Rehab Center Board of Trustees recognized an increased need for services in the Lake Wales area community and opened Our Children’s Academy. In the first class there were 18 students.
Our Children’s Academy experienced rapid growth demonstrating the significant need for a program dedicated to providing services to special needs children in the area. Four years later, in 2010, over 130 students were enrolled for the school year. By 2013, the number had grown to over 200 students.
In 2010, the Academy was approved to open a charter middle school for special needs students. Our Children’s Middle Academy was opened in 2012.
In 2014, the Board of Trustees worked with Polk County Schools and consolidated Our Children’s Academy and Our Children’s Middle Academy under the Our Children’s Academy charter. This change was made to provide a more unified educational experience and has benefited the students by providing a better means of sharing resources. As part of this process, Our Children’s Middle Academy was closed in June of 2014.
Our Children’s Academy, through the Polk County School Board, received a 10 year Charter Renewal through 2026 to include high school. With growing population in east Polk County, Our Children’s Academy looks to excel at education for children (PK1 – 12th grade) with special needs.
The unified Our Children’s Academy is growing into a new facility and looking to expand enrollment for children in grades Pre-K through 12th grade for the 2016-17 school year.
