First-Year Sobriety $9.08 The first in a series of three recovery guides for the first three years of sobriety, First-Year Sobriety uses the voices of many women and men who are struggling in the often baffling territory of their first year of sobriety to show that despite their differing experiences, all are united in the process of giving life without alcohol or other drugs a chance. These are people who are alternately amazed, appalled, delighted, depressed, illuminated, disturbed, or simply thrown by their first days, weeks, and months of sobriety Kettelhack explores the challenges all seem to face: learning to break through loneliness, isolation, and fear; finding ways to deal with anger, depression, and resentment; and learning how to deal with a new and sometimes overwhelming happiness. The early days of recovery, are often lonely and frightening. First-Year Sobriety offers constant reassurance that no one is alone or unique in this journey. |

Ms. Moffet’s First Year $4.99 As a national teaching shortage loomed in the summer of 2000, Donna Moffett, a forty-five-year-old legal secretary, answered an ad seeking “talented professionals” from other fields to teach in some of New York City’s worst schools. Seven weeks later she was in a first-grade classroom at P.S. 92 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, almost completely unprepared for what she was about to face. Abby Goodnough, a New York Times education reporter, followed Moffett through her first year in the New York City Teaching Fellows program. In this story, Goodnough, shows how all the education buzzwords, bromides and prescriptions for reform – the tired slogans that seem to multiply every election year – melt to irrelevance at the classroom door. This is not a Hollywood-friendly cliché about one person making a difference, nor a reductive indictment of the public education system. It is a portrait of the inadequacy of good intentions, of the challenges of educating poor and immigrant populations, and of a well-meaning but poorly prepared teacher who tries, valiantly, to keep swimming after jumping in over her head. |

The First Year and Beyond (Paperback) $25.79 The transitions that happen before, after, and during the undergraduate college experience are the subject of this volume–transitions that are experienced by students (and sometimes their parents) and guided by educators. The topic of collegiate transitions has been a primary focus of higher education literature and research over the past twenty-five years. But almost all of this attention has centered on the first year, the transition period when students are most likely to drop out of college. In spite of its importance to students and institutions, the first year is not only the significant transition period that affects student success. This volume expands the lens to include a view of transitions that precede and follow the traditional first year, as well as the critical junctures throughout the undergraduate years that promote or impede student progress to a degree. Chapters discuss: OL {list-style:disc} P:{margin-left 60px} Rethinking College Readiness Blending High School and College: Rethinking the Transition New Challenges in Working with Traditional-Aged College Students From Helicopter Parent to Valued Partner: Shaping the Parental Relationship for Student Success Adult Students in Higher Education: A Portrait of Transitions Sophomores in Transition: The Forgotten Year "Feeling like a Freshman Again": The Transfer Student Transition Institutional Efforts to Move Seniors Through and Beyond College College Transitions: The Other Side of the Story Taken as a whole, this volume describes a continuum of the college or university experience through the framework of student transition. Depending on the characteristics of the students, their entry points, and their subsequent decisions, the nature of the college experience will be different. But student success from entry to degree attainment also depends in great measure on the willingnes |

The First Year–Fibromyalgia (Paperback) $12.12 Her own diagnosis of fibromyalgia in the early 1990`s led Claudia Craig Marek to educate herself on this still largely misunderstood disease. Here she presents an in-depth guide for the patient who desires to take charge and manage the treatment of his or her own disease. Marek`s years of reading medical literature, consulting professionals, and exploring the experiences of other fibromyalgia patients inform this fact-filled handbook.
