Learning to Learn $15.87 Every child can learn, but many students underachieve in school because of differences in the way they learn. At Landmark College, the first college founded specifically to help students with language-based learning problems, including dyslexia, and attention deficit disorder, students are taught the learning skills that will enable them to function effectively and independently both academically and in the workplace. In Learning to Learn, Carolyn Olivier and Rosemary Bowler discuss, in easy-to-understand language, the nature of learning and how we process information. Basing their methods on the techniques Landmark has employed so successfully, they give guidelines for creating an education program tailored to the individual's needs and abilities, whether the student is eight or eighteen. Parents, students, and teachers describe how teaching methods that recognize the different ways we learn have opened the door to academic success. The authors explain how the principles of teaching and learning described in Learning to Learn can be introduced into the classroom, used at home by concerned parents, and adapted by those trying to overcome learning problems on their own. |

What the U.s. Can Learn from China (Hardcover) $21.17 China succeeded Japan as the world`s second largest economy in 2010–many predict it will grow to be larger than the United States by 2020. Three decades ago, China was a rural economy with barely any exports. The rise of China presents the United States with a "Sputnik Moment," in the words of President Obama. Will we rise to the challenge as we did during the space race, or will we rationalize and scapegoat our way to explaining why we can`t compete? Ann Lee provides an unvarnished assessment of China’s political economy and governance structure, analyzing the sources of China’s success and identifying lessons that can be applied by other governments regardless of ideology. As a Chinese-American who emigrated to the U.S. from Hong Kong at the age of seven, Lee is uniquely situated to help Americans understand how China sees its own society and how to adapt some Chinese practices to benefit the U. S. For example, the Chinese economy is designed to make the kind of unproductive and unrestrained financial speculation that has devastated much of the West impossible. Aspiring Chinese politicians have to pass tests to prove their competency to govern. The Chinese homicide rate is a fifth of what it is in the U.S. While not blind to China’s shortcomings, Lee argues that rather than demonizing China, a more productive use of time and resources is to learn from this rising power in order to maximize the talent of millions of people.   |

Learn to Earn $9.19 Many investors, including some with substantial portfolios, have only the sketchiest idea of how the stock market works. The reason, say Lynch and Rothchild, is that the basics of investing – the fundamentals of our economic system and what they have to do with the stock market – aren`t taught in school. At a time when individuals have to make important decisions about saving for college and 401(k) retirement funds, this failure to provide a basic education in investing can have tragic consequences. In Learn to Earn, Lynch and Rothchild explain in a style accessible to anyone who is high-school age or older how to read a stock table in the daily newspaper, how to understand a company annual report, and why everyone should pay attention to the stock market. They explain not only how to invest, but also how to think like an investor. |

Listen & Learn $11.98 Audiovisual shaolin savants Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson don’t step from behind the shadows of their phenomenally successful multimedia operation very often, and considering they are rare contributors to Coldcut’s Solid Steel radio show, they proved something of a surprise choice for this sophomore outing in Ninja Tune’s mix series. The pair’s album, however, proves to be more than on a par with DJ Food’s antecedent effort, peppered with vocal samples and technical trickery and aided and abetted by some gadget-laden CD turntables. Indeed, Listen & Learn proves an apt title for an album that is a lesson in selection — skipping from their own hazy “Telemetron” through original block-rockers from Dawn Penn, Grandmaster Flash, and Ike & Tina Turner’s much-sampled “Funky Mule” before skipping to a more modern fandango by way of Boards of Canada. The three-track electro beatdown and subsequent segue from Michael Viner to Young MC’s “Apache”-borrowing “Know How” is inspired, with Hill and Brunson mixing and matching their formidable reputation in the video suite with layer upon layer of record as far as can be, from the Protools-assisted 4/4 nonsense which has become the common weapon of choice for the mixed compilation. Another astonishing addition to what is becoming a wonderful series. ~ Kingsley Marshall, Rovi |

Willing To Learn (Paperback) $22.04 Writer and educator Mary Catherine Bateson is best known for the proposal that lives should be looked at as compositions, each one an artistic creation expressing individual responses to the unexpected. This collection can be read as a memoir of unfolding curiosity, for it brings together essays and occasional pieces, many of them previously unpublished or unknown to readers who know the author only from her books, written in the course of an unconventional career. Bateson`s professional life was interrupted repeatedly. She responded by refocusing her curiosity — by being willing to learn. The connections and echoes between the entries in her book are as intriguing as the contrasts in style and subject matter. The work is grounded in cultural anthropology but shaped by the observation that, in a world of rapid change and encounters with strangers, individuals can no longer depend on following traditionally defined paths. Willing to Learn is arranged thematically. One section includes a sampling of writings about Bateson`s parents, anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. The longest section focuses primarily on the contemporary United States and deals with life stages and gender. Bateson argues that because women`s lives have changed most radically, women are pioneers of emerging patterns that will affect everyone. Another section deals with belief systems, conflict, and change, especially in the Middle East, and the final section with different ways of knowing. Bateson is a singular thinker whose work enriches lives by bringing fresh, original ideas to subjects that affect all of our lives. Willing to Learn is at once an articulation of and an enduring testament to the artistic creation Bateson has produced pursuing her own life`s work. |

Learn to Think and Write (Paperback) $33.95 "The EPILLAW Paradigm is a practical method for developing writing skills. It consists of an original nine-level taxonomy and sequential methodology of listening, speaking, writing and reading. In this method, the development of writing precedes the development of reading. The work consists of two books. In the introductory book, the author explicates the first six levels. The behaviors involved in EPILLAW train the student how to think consecutively and logically. The first three levels establish the concrete assimilation of knowledge; the middle three elevate the students` cognitive ability from the concrete to the abstract cognition of knowledge. Through charting, the students learn the EPILLAW essencing modality that enables them to think abstractly.Lastly, having achieved the skill of abstraction, the student can personalize ideas and, from there, develop writing proficiency. In the advanced book, the author explores the final three levels of the writing process"– Provided by publisher. |

Learn the Hard Way $9.32 Four albums into their career, the Copyrights seem to have set up a pattern. Albums one and three, We Didn’t Come Here to Die and Make Sound, were bright, speedy pop-punk in the grand Screeching Weasel tradition, while album two, Mutiny Pop, was a shade harder in edge and darker in tone. The same can be said for Learn the Hard Way, which also introduces just a hint of old-school hardcore in the abbreviated song lengths: nearly half of the 14 songs are in the 90 seconds or less range, with one, “Solid Connex,” getting its point across in half a minute. Aside from that welcome brevity, cranky songs like “Shit’s Fucked” and “Headaches,” and a newly roughened vocal tone from lead singer Adam Fletcher throughout, most notably on the hoarse “Pulse Check,” further move Learn the Hard Way away from the generally sunny tone of 2007′s Make Sound. However, this is still the Copyrights, so the band’s heart remains in crisp, melodic pop-punk delivered with hooky riffs and spunky energy, even on darker-hued material like the somewhat desperate “Switchblades” which, rather than exploding into the expected transcendent fist-pumping final chorus after an atypically long instrumental break, instead builds the tension further with a repeated call and response refrain before cutting off with a dead stop. In this context, a giddy love song like “She Turns It Up” sounds even more welcome than it might otherwise be. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

Helping Children Learn (Paperback) $28.59 "Exceptional…delivers on the goal of connecting assessment with intervention."—Alan S. Kaufman, Ph.D., Clinical Professor of Psychology, Yale Child Study Center, School of Medicine"A valuable resource for teachers and parents…enables educators to access exactly the information they need to improve the performance of students who struggle."—Norah S. And because the handouts were developed around the four cognitive areas in Dr. Naglieri`s well-respected PASS theory—Planning, Attention, Simultaneous processing, and Successive processing—users can be sure they`re getting proven, reliable approaches to solving students` academic challenges. The intervention guide that school psychologists and educators will use and share with parents year after year, Helping Children Learn is the lifeline struggling students need to overcome barriers to learning and achieve long-term school success. |

We Never Learn (Paperback) $16.42 Nirvana, the White Stripes, Hole, the Hives – all sprang from an underground music scene where similarly raw bands, enjoying various degrees of success and hard luck, played for throngs of fans in venues ranging from dive bars to massive festivals, but were mostly ignored by a music industry focused on mega-bands and shiny pop stars. We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001 tracks the inspiration and beautiful destruction of this largely undocumented movement, the last generation of punks and rockers to conquer city after city without the diluting force of the Internet. What they took, they fought for, every night. They reveled in `50s rock `n` roll and `60s garage rock as much as Iggy Pop, the Ramones, and Black Flag, while creating their own wave of gut-busting riffs and rhythm. The majority of bands that populate this book – the Dwarves, the Gories, the Supersuckers, the Mummies, Rocket from the Crypt, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Muffs, and the Donnas among them – gained little long-term reward from their nonstop touring and brain-slapping records. What they did have was free liquor, good drugs, guilt-free sex, and a crazy good time, all the while building a dedicated fan base that extends across America, Europe, and Japan. Truly, this is the last great wave of down-and-dirty rock `n` roll, one whose hangover can still be felt in bars and clubs everywhere in the world. |

The Caleb Quest: What You Can Learn from the Boldest Dreamer in the Bible $4.99 Most of us began our adult lives with ambitious dreams and the energy and determination to make them come true. But somewhere along the way our focus changed – life “happened,” and we allowed our dreams to fizzle or even die. Is that the way it has to be? Do dreams come true for “ordinary” people? And if so, what does it take to make them happen? Author Mark Atteberry believes God has answered these questions in the life of Caleb, the boldest dreamer and achiever in all of Scripture. In The Caleb Quest, Atteberry allows us to see that dreams don’t come true by accident. On the contrary, fulfilled dreams are the result of clear thinking, strong faith, patience, and hard work. Geared to the everyday Christian, this biblical plan helps readers to test their dreams, identify “dream assassins,” get God involved, accept His perfect timing, take action in pursuit of their dreams, and use their dreams to bless others. This inspirational book offers a realistic hope to anyone seeking to make a lifelong dream come true. |
