19th day of July 2006 and to suggest that the Atlanta Braves are swinging the lumber would be a bit 'a euphemism. They played 14 games in the seventh month of the year 13-1 and are the most complete that stretch. You have your bookie on speed dial yet?
Che people, is an astonishing 93% and I can not live with these numbers at any time of year. Andruw Jones was 5-for-5 with two homers and matched his career high with six RBIs to help the Braves to become the first team since the '30 Yankees to score 10 runs or more in five games immediately with a 14-5 victory over St. Louis Cardinals the night of Tuesday.
Adam LaRoche, Chipper Jones and Brian McCann also homered for the Braves have scored 65 runs offensive explosion that includes two 15-run games. The last time the franchise reached double figures in five straight games was in 1897 when the Braves were called the Beaneaters which amount to 61 tracks.
65 runs in five games is the best in the franchise since those same Beaneaters scored 78, including 25 in a game and 21 in another from 31 May — June 3. Braves have 81 hits during their five-run game and 98th in their past six months, returning to a 8-3 victory over Cincinnati on July 9, which is the last match before the All-Star break.
Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, but all four multihit efforts. He's batting, 534 (39-for-73) when scanning with eight homers and 23 RBI.
During their six-game winning streak they have outscored their opponents 77-32 and have hit 19 homers in the last five games – the maximum for the franchise in a five-game span and only two by the Major League record set by the 1977 Boston Red Sox and 1999 Cincinnati Reds.
The Cardinals lost 15-3 in the opening three rounds of games on Monday, Tuesday and trailed 13-1 in the fifth, one-two to remember the sequence of play Blowout loss to the Chicago White Sox to 20-6 and 13-5 on June 20 – 21.
After tearing starters Jeff Weaver and Jason Marquis, Atlanta faces Chris Carpenter (8-4, 2.85 ERA) Wednesday in the final series. Beat the Braves July 4 from participation in two runs and four hits in five innings of a 6-3 road win, his first victory in four career start against Atlanta.
Carpenter is going for its third straight win after striking out seven in pitching two-hitter in the Cardinals '5 -0 win over Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

Ramblin’ Bob $10.39 Depending on the perspective, Robert Nighthawk was either a minor major bluesman or a major minor one who never recorded enough to receive breakthrough attention in his own right. Label or genre anthologies have been the best bet for finding his cornerstone pieces, “Anna Lee” and “Sweet Black Angel,” songs that provide an unusual roots link between the Muddy Waters and B.B. King branches of the Delta blues tree. Part of the profile problem is that he first recorded as Robert Lee McCoy doing acoustic, Delta-rooted blues accompanied by the first Sonny Boy Williamson and Big Joe Williams in the late ’30s. After dropping out of sight for roughly a decade, he resurfaced as Robert Nighthawk for a few sessions of a smooth brand of electric slide blues in the early Chess days, and then cut more jumping material for United in the early ’50s. Ramblin’ Bob combines all three phases, so it’s a definitive collection by default, the single Nighthawk disc any comprehensive blues collection needs. The sound quality may not be pristine, since the early material is probably taken from 78s (a dead giveaway is the runoff groove sticking on “Friar’s Point Blues”). The McCoy tracks are classic examples of pre-World War II Delta blues, with themes and images drawing from animal metaphors, going back down South, trains, and back-door-man action, and there’s a healthy variety in the music. “Prowling Nighthawk” (the obvious source of his phase-two surname) is an excellent celebration of the rambling blues life, and “Take It Easy Baby” is springy and upbeat with very prominent harmonica. Williamson is completely integrated into the music, employing different harp sounds from the high registers on “Mamie Lee” to the rough-and-tumble, bass-heavy rhythm with (probably) Speckled Red on piano on “Every Day and Night.” Sonny Boy chips in with answering vocals on “Next Door Neighbor” while Red’s piano strides out, and though the guitar doesn’t sound like it’s in tune, the music still works. “Take It Easy” and “Ol’ Mose” are almost ragtime tracks, suggesting that Nighthawk’s unusual smoothness may spring from a suave vocal style that owes more to jazzy styling than rough blues shouting. That smoothness shows up on the electric Nighthawk sides, trio sessions with bass and piano that are his best-known tracks and classic examples of the early Chess sound. The clarity of the recorded sound is noticeably better and the shift from chordal guitar comps to single-string lines answering the vocals is obvious, but the United tracks are something else again. These are his first studio sessions with a drummer, and Jump Jackson on the skins and Roosevelt Sykes’ piano dominate “Kansas City Blues” and “Take It Easy Baby.” His slide guitar is more evident on “Crying Won’t Help You” and “Feel So Bad,” but Sykes takes the solo. Maybe that was the United way, because Curtis Jones is as prominent in the mix as Nighthawk on “Bricks in My Pillow,” another example of bedrock Delta imagery. “You Missed |

Barbecue Bob in Fishtown $11.98 The third full solo release by Glenn Jones finds the scholarly, carefully elegant performer continuing to stake out his own style on not only acoustic guitar, but banjo, which as he describes in his unsurprisingly entertaining and informative liner notes as “an instrument I love, but which I only came to in the past two years or so.” Jones’ apparently effortless way around performing what are often astonishingly complex pieces makes Barbecue Bob in Fishtown as much a joy as his many other solo and collaborative efforts, but in an odd — and inviting — way, Barbecue Bob is almost a pop album for him. Not in a mainstream 2009-era sense of the term, but the focus on shorter pieces and immediate, joyful thrills helps situate the release as both a showcase for his abilities and a way to introduce a new listener to possibilities of experimental acoustic performance on the instruments. There’s a palpable energy and cheer in songs like the title track as well as stark, strange beauty in the slow, focused notes on “Snowdrops (For Robert Walser),” while his banjo performances combine the familiar, fluid flow of his guitar work with the instrument’s at-once homey and strangely distant, mysterious sound, as readily heard on “Keep It a Hundred Years” and “A Lark in Earnest.” Meanwhile, one of Jones’ icons, Robbie Basho, gets a hat tip not once but twice — “1337 Shattuck Avenue, Apartment D” is a specific tribute to the musician, while “Redwood Ramble Misremembered” resulted as Jones explains in the notes, after remembering a portion of Basho’s “Redwood Ramble” and ending up with a wholly new piece in the end instead. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Johnson, Ken Hay, Kim Yoon-ok, Tim Keesee, Shelton Smith, Maze Jackson. Excerpt: William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 – July 26, 1925) was an American politician in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. He was a dominant force in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, standing three times as its candidate for President of the United States (1896, 1900 and 1908). He served in the United States Congress briefly as a Representative from Nebraska and was the 41st United States Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson, 1913-1916. Bryan was a devout Presbyterian, a supporter of popular democracy, an enemy of gold, banks and railroads, a leader of the silverite movement in the 1890s, a peace advocate, a prohibitionist, and an opponent of Darwinism on religious grounds. With his deep, commanding voice and wide travels, he was one of the best known orators and lecturers of the era. Because of his faith in the goodness and rightness of the common people, he was called "The Great Commoner." In the intensely fought 1896 and 1900 elections, he was defeated by William McKinley but retained control of the Democratic Party. With over 500 speeches in 1896, Bryan invented the national stumping to… |

One More: Music of Thad Jones $12.78 To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and as an excuse to play the compositions of the late great Thad Jones, a group of top jazz veterans was enlisted for this project. Michael Patterson arranged 11 of Jones’ songs, adapting Thad’s own arrangements, which were originally made for either combos or a big band, for the all-star octet. Each of the veteran musicians had an association with Thad Jones. Happily, they all sound in pretty good form, with the tenors of Benny Golson, James Moody, and Frank Wess battling it out on “One More.” A tape of the late pianist Sir Roland Hanna is used during the first part of Jones’ most famous original, “A Child Is Born.” Jimmy Owens proves to be an excellent fill-in for Thad; this is one of his finest recordings. It is also fitting that Thad’s older brother, Hank Jones, is on piano. The final number, Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Mood,” is included because it was one of Thad Jones’ favorite songs. All in all, this is a well-conceived and very musical tribute. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Jimmy Owens – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Benny Golson – Sax (Tenor); Bob Brookmeyer – Trombone (Valve), Trombone; Frank Wess – Sax (Tenor), Sax (Alto), Flute; Hank Jones – Piano; James Moody – Sax (Soprano); Mickey Roker – Drums; Richard Davis – Guitar (Bass), Bass |

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back $12.74 The frequently recurring title characters, employed by writer and director Kevin Smith as supporting players in several of his films, are put to rest with this comedy that focuses on them exclusively. Jay (Jason Mews) and Silent Bob (Smith) are a pair of stoned New Jersey slackers who have long been used as the templates for a pair of popular comic book heroes, Bluntman and Chronic. When they learn that their alter egos are to be turned into a major motion picture without their consent or compensation, the pair sets off for Hollywood to sabotage the production. Along the way, they encounter an ape, a nun (Carrie Fisher), the cast of Scooby-Doo, a Charlie’s Angels-style band of sexy women who use them as stool pigeons in a diamond heist, and an unhinged wildlife ranger (Will Ferrell). They also meet up with some regulars from the Smith canon, including Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), Brian O’Halloran as Dante Hicks, Jason Lee as Banky Edwards, Alanis Morissette as God, and actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in dual roles as themselves and two other familiar characters. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back co-stars numerous other recognizable performers in roles of various sizes, including Shannen Doherty, Jason Biggs, James Van Der Beek, Shannon Elizabeth, Tracy Morgan, Judd Nelson, Chris Rock, and George Carlin, among others. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |

Bob Dylan: 1966 World Tour – The Home Movies $8.46 In 1965, Bob Dylan was the reigning king of the new folk music boom, but while he had earned a large and loyal audience playing earnest and elliptical songs of social protest and romantic puzzlement accompanied by his acoustic guitar, he was eager to strike out into new territory, and he shocked fans at that year’s Newport Folk Festival by showing up with an electric guitar and a thrown-together rock & roll band. Later that year, Dylan took his joyous outrage on the road, with a tight, but hard-hitting, rock & roll combo, the Hawks, joining him for a series of shows in which the singer and his band (who would later rename themselves the Band) were often confronted by puzzled and vocally angry crowds. Hawks drummer Levon Helm, unhappy with the unfriendly reception, dropped out after a few dates, and after substitute timekeepers Bobby Gregg and Sandy Konikoff both vacated the drummer’s seat, Mickey Jones — a Texan transplanted to Los Angeles who had enjoyed successful gigs with Trini Lopez and Johnny Rivers — landed the job of joining Dylan and the Hawks for a tour of Europe. A photography buff, Jones brought his home movie camera along with him, and Bob Dylan: World Tour 1966 — The Home Movies compiles Jones’ amateur footage of life on the road and off-stage with Dylan and the Hawks. In addition, Jones shares his memories of the tour, discusses his career before and after working with Dylan, and offers his own observations on what Dylan’s music meant to him and to music fans everywhere. The Home Movies includes no musical performances from Bob Dylan; accompaniment for Jones’ silent footage is provided by Highway 61 Revisited, a Bob Dylan tribute band. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Bob $9.6 Influenced by the chickens he lives with, a rooster named Bob spends his days clucking instead of crowing. Tipped off by a friendly cat that he is making the wrong sound, Bob sets out to learn exactly what sort of sound he should be making. As he searches for his sound, Bob learns about the sounds made by a variety of other animals including a dog, a frog, a cow, and an owl. When Bob finally does learn to crow, he finds that the sound, as well as all the others he has learned, comes in very handy indeed. Color illustrations accompany the text. |

Live at Billy Bob’s Texas $12.78 Doug Stone is a patient man. He was already past 30 when he got his first record deal. He made up for lost time quickly though; he scored a total of eight Top Ten hits before the end of 1992. Stone is one of those authentic country singers, equally at home with hard honky tonk or poetic love ballads. He delivers each song as if he authored it. And indeed, who could ever hear “Faith in Me Faith in You” by anyone else and believe it? This song is so inclusive and authentic it could have been part of President Barack Obama’s campaign for election. Live at Billy Bob’s Texas features Stone and his fine backing band playing the hell out of his hits and fan favorites. This is no mere color-by-numbers fan set, but a beautifully recorded, on-the-wire performance by one of the great singers in the country tradition — even if the masses don’t currently remember that. The ballad singers on the country charts owe plenty to Stone whether they admit it or not. Stone learned his ballad style from the best of them: George Jones and George Strait, Marty Robbins and Don Williams. The evidence is in his delivery of tracks like “Little Houses” and “Busy Being in Love,” tough uptempo rocking country numbers like “That’s How We Roll” and “I’d Be Better Off (In a Pine Box),” and even standard barroom weepers like “These Lips Don’t Know.” These are all here, as are “A Jukebox with a Country Song” and “In a Different Light.” In addition, there is a newly recorded studio version of “Don’t Tell Mamma.” For fans of Doug Stone, this is a welcome addition to the catalog. For the uninitiated, this is a fantastic introduction. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Doug Stone – Various, Vocals; Chad Rueffer – Vocals (Background), Bass, Guitar (Bass); Randy Reinhart – Keyboards; Ron Stafford – Vocals (Background), Guitar (Steel), Guitar (Acoustic); Ron Thompson – Vocals (Background), Drums; Ronelle Stafford – Vocals (Background), Guitar (Steel), Guitar (Acoustic) |

Spiked!: The Music of Spike Jones $7.97 Spike Jones & His City Slickers were accomplished musicians who could incorporate sneezes, belches, and all kinds of oddball percussion such as gunshots and bells into their arrangements of all kinds of music; “Dark Eyes” and “Holiday for Strings” with its cackle chorus are two of the best examples within this anthology. The musical comedy duo Homer & Jethro sing a zany lyric to the opera Pagliacci, retitled “Pal-YatChee,” while Paul Frees (the man of a thousand voices, best known as the original voice of the Pillsbury Doughboy) spoofs the popular baritones of the 1940s in “Dark Eyes.” Two previously unreleased tracks from 1961, including Raymond Scott’s “Powerhouse” and the rumba “Frantic Freeway,” sound over-produced to the point where they would have been difficult to perform on-stage, unlike most of the material that Spike Jones recorded earlier in his career. Since a lot of this material is extremely hard to find elsewhere, this compilation is highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Jack Marsh – Bassoon; Lou Singer – Xylophone; Spike Jones – Cowbell, Sound Effects, Drums; Betsy Mills – Harp; Charlotte Tinsley – Harp; Dick Morgan – Banjo, Guitar, Vocals; Freddie Morgan – Banjo, Vocals; Hank Stern – Tuba; Herschell Ratliff – Tuba; Jerry Houser – Vocals (Background); Luther Roundtree – Banjo; Mary Jane Barton – Harp; Perry Botkin – Banjo; Art Most – Trombone; Arthur Rando – Clarinet, Saxophone; Beauregard Lee – Drums; Bill DePew – Saxophone, Clarinet; Bob Poland – Saxophone; |

The Political Art of Bob Dylan $26.68 Boucher (Political Theory, Cardiff University) and Browning (Politics, Oxford Brookes University) and their contributors examine the political meaning of Dylan`s songs and their significance in U.S. political culture. Ranging in theme from how the idea of judgment has developed in Dylan`s lyrics over the decades to an evaluation (in terms of Adorno`s writings on commitment in art) of his mid-sixties shift to electric music, essays examine Dylan`s importance as a songwriter, performer, and social critic. Non-academic readers will be most interested in the new introduction, which takes a broad view of Dylan`s entire career, and in musician Michael Jones` analysis of the infamous "Judas!" cry at one of the concerts during Dylan`s 1966 U.K. tour. While the book has its weak points–huge chunks of Dylan`s post 1960s career are ignored and the writing sometimes borders on self-indulgence–readers who are up for an intellectual challenge will find much of interest here. The Best of Etta Jones: The Prestige Singles $9.58 While Etta Jones could not be placed into the very top tier of jazz singers, she was a good one. And as this compilation draws 18 tracks from the most commercially and artistically successful phase of her career, it might be the best place to start for hearing her work. Recorded between 1960 and 1963, these did all happen to be released on singles, as the title indicates, though it’s sometimes forgotten that there were still jazz tracks being issued as singles in the 1960s. Of course, the most popular of those was “Don’t Go to Strangers,” which actually made the pop Top 40 in 1960. Jones was a warm and versatile singer with a bit more appeal to pop listeners than most, usually backed by good small combos on this mixture of ballads and up-tempo material, though Oliver Nelson arranged and conducted the strings on a most adventurous, eccentric “Unchained Melody.” More satisfying than the ballads, though, are the sassier, faster, and slightly bluesier outings, like “You Came a Long Way From St. Louis,” “In the Dark,” the sultry “The Gal From Joe’s,” and (again with Nelson’s strings) “Just Friends.” The cha cha pass at “Nature Boy” is good, too, with Kenny Burrell handling one of the guitars. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Arthur Clarke – Reeds; Eric Dixon – Reeds; Lem Winchester – Vibraphone; Phil Bodner – Reeds; Ray Alonge – French Horn; Bob Ashton – Sax (Tenor); Bucky Pizzarelli – Guitar; Charlie Persip – Drums; Ed Shaughnessy – Drums; Ernie Hayes – Piano; |

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. $15.18 After wresting control of the Monkees from Don Kirschner and recording the very good Headquarters album as a mostly self-contained unit, the bandmembers returned to using studio musicians to augment their sound as well as looking outside the group for the majority of the songs on their fourth album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. Whatever the reason for the decision, the resulting album is one of their best. Filled with hooky pop like “She Hangs Out” and the Harry Nilsson-penned “Cuddly Toy,” psychedelic ravers “Daily Nightly” and “Star Collector” (both of which feature the newly invented Moog synthesizer), Mike Nesmith-produced rockers (“Love Is Only Sleeping”), and ballads (the lovely “Don’t Call on Me”), the album is filler-free and fun-filled. That it contains three of their finest songs (“Words,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” and the song that “invented” country-rock for better or for worse, “What Am I Doing Hangin’ ‘Round?”) means that not only is it one of the Monkees’ best, it is one of 1967′s best. To think that both this album and Headquarters came out the same year! Most bands would be lucky to have two albums this good come out their entire career. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. is a must-have for any fan of smart, fun, and exciting ’60s pop. It doesn’t get much better than this. [Rhino's 1995 reissue of the album adds seven previously unreleased songs including alternate versions of "Daily Nightly" and "Star Collector."] ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Paul Beaver – Moog Synthesizer, Synthesizer; Al Porcino – Horn; Bill Martin – Clavinet, Piano, Keyboards, Organ, Percussion; Bob Rafelson – Clavinet, Organ, Piano; Doug Dillard – Banjo; Harry Nilsson – Clavinet, Piano, Organ; Pete Candoli – Horn; Robert Knight – Trombone (Bass); Robert S. The Immortal Bobby: Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf $29.03 Acclaim for The Immortal Bobby "Just when you think there is nothing new to be said or written on the subject of Bob Jones, Ron Rapoport comes along and proves that theory completely untrue. The Immortal Bobby is wonderfully reported and superbly written." –John Feinstein, author of A Good Walk Spoiled and Caddy for Life "The story of Bobby Jones’s singular life is one of the most fascinating in sports history. Ron Rapoport’s thoughtful, graceful style is well suited to telling that story." –Bob Costas, broadcaster, NBC Sports and HBO Sports "Beyond the grainy newsreels and the confetti falling on Broadway and Peachtree Street, there was an essential Bobby Jones, and Ron Rapoport reveals him splendidly in a portrait as graceful as the man. There’s more here than Grand Slam 1930–the jangling nerves and self-doubt, the towering modesty in response to fame, the complexity of an Atlanta patrician, a life richly lived." –Gary M. Pomerantz, author of Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn "The skills of writing and reporting that fans of Ron Rapoport, like me, have come to expect from him over the years–candor, thoughtfulness, insight, perspective, humor–are once again demonstrated and illuminated in The Immortal Bobby. It is an important book about an important sports figure that, typically for Rapoport, goes beyond the confines of sports and fits firmly in the context of our culture." –Ira Berkow, sports columnist and author of Red: A Biography of Red Smith "Here is Bobby Jones as you’ve never seen him, almost fearful in the fires of competition, and Ron Rapoport shows us how that man became a legend." –Dave Kindred, coauthor (with Tom Callahan) of Around the World in 18 Holes |
