Hippotherapy literally means “treatment with the help of the horse” from the Greek word “hippos,” meaning horse.  The horses are used as a tool for physical, occupational, speech & language therapy, emotional growth, and learning.  Many riders experience a connection to the horse that few modalities can create.  Not only does riding help raise their self-esteem, but it also teaches them essential skills.  It improves balance, creates trust, and creates a friendship between rider and horse.  The benefits of horseback riding are as numerous as the types of disabilities and conditions served by this activity.

Research has shown that students who participate in therapeutic riding can experience physical, emotional, and mental rewards.

Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait.  Riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.  For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience, and self-esteem.  The sense of independence found on horseback benefits all who ride.

The Hippotherapy Program is offered twice a week from October to May (depending on the weather).

Your donations will help to support another of the many worthwhile programs that Our Children’s Academy in Lake Wales has to offer.
